Day 115, Thursday, December 1, Salina, Day 13
Spent my last day in Salina closing up the Defender , instructing Mai Thi (the motel manager) on how to handle the auto transporter when they arrive to collect the Defender, packing, boxing up some things i want to send home tomorrow, and preparing my final contingency plan if Delta rejects Donner's kennel (we drive home in the rental car).
On our walk tonight, we came across two middle school students, Raven and Ryan, and Raven, excitedly asked to pet Donner. She was rewarded not only with her request but with the last On the Road patch. 250 coveted patches now in the hands of of 250 people spread out all across North America and Germany.
Plan for tomorrow is to go to Richfield to rent a car, come back to the motel and finish packing, drive to Delta Cargo at Salt Lake City to scout it out for the next day, then check in to La Quinta Hotel for the night.
I am amazed at how i have no particular feelings about heading home and ending this trip or about how half the trip was spent in layovers. It's like these four layovers were just part of the routine of on the road camping, except that to the extent that they added difficulty to the journey, the greater the reward for me. The biggest reward, of course, is that Donner and I are returning home safely, and i am leaving confident that the Defender will not be far behind. In the meantime, nothing can diminish the experience of this entire trip. Nothing.
